Wind Mitigation Inspections

Mitigation means to lessen in force or intensity; to make less severe.

Therefore, wind mitigation means to lessen the force or intensity and its results of strong wind, like hurricanes and tropical storms.

The following items are building features that reduce wind damage for which many insurance companies offer wind premium discounts.

How many of these features does your home already possess?
Your home may have more than you think!

Roof coverings, such as shingles that meet the FBC Requirements.

Roof decks that have been installed with large nails and close spacing.

Hurricane clips/straps that hold the roof structure to the walls.

Protection of openings such as windows and doors with impact resistant glazing or
other protection systems and reinforced garage doors (including large missile impact
resistant rating).

Secondary Water Resistance that prevents the roof from leaking if the roof covering is
blown off in a windstorm (this became a building code requirement in 2007).

Roof Design: Hip roofs divert the stronger winds and therefore sustain less damage.

Newly Constructed Homes built to the 2001 Florida Building Code.

Homes built to the South Florida Building Code which went into effect in
Miami-Dade and Broward Counties after 1994.

Roof Condition Inspections

This is primarily a requirement for Citizens Insurance Company (although other
insurance companies and mortgage companies will sometimes require this as well)
for homes that are more than 25 years old.

Four Point Inspections

This inspection is required by insurance companies as a contingency for older homes. The definition of “older” varies with each insurance company, but most will require this for homes that are older than 40 years.

The four points are roof, electrical, plumbing, and heating.
